Egypt launches trial operations at Red Sea Container Terminal 1 at Port Said

Red Sea Container Terminal 1 at Port Said began trial operations on Monday, marking a major step in Egypt’s plan to develop its ports into a regional hub for transport, logistics, and transit trade.

The terminal, operated by the Hutchison-CMA-COSCO consortium, received its first vessel, the CMA CGM HELIUM, arriving from Singapore.

The fully automated terminal features six giant quay cranes (STS) and 18 automated yard cranes (RTG) using intelligent systems to organise containers, reduce human error, and enhance efficiency. Operations are managed through a Terminal Operating System (TOS) with GPS and RFID tracking, central crane control rooms, and environmentally friendly technologies to maximise energy efficiency.

The terminal’s launch will increase the port’s capacity to host major global shipping lines, support Egyptian exports, and expand transit trade. It also integrates with railways, high-speed trains, and multimodal transport networks, aiming to position Egypt as a key hub in global supply chains.
