Egypt eyes 100% rural sanitation coverage under Haya Karima Initiative – PM
Egypt is determined to achieve full sanitation coverage in rural areas once projects under the presidential Haya Karima Programme are completed, Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly said on Wednesday.
Speaking at the weekly government press briefing, Madbouly recalled that when he became minister of housing in 2014, just 12 per cent of villages had access to sewage services, leaving the vast majority without basic sanitation infrastructure. He said coverage has since risen to around 65 per cent, reflecting sustained public investment in rural development.
The Haya Karima Initiative, launched to improve living standards in Egypt’s countryside, will now aim to close the remaining gap, extending modern sanitation services to all rural communities nationwide.
