Egypt oversees new public transport fares following fuel price hike

Egypt’s Minister of Local Development, Manal Awad, on Tuesday, oversaw the implementation of new fare rates for all public transport, including microbuses, service vehicles, and buses, following the Automatic Pricing Committee’s decision to raise gasoline and diesel prices effective 10 March 2026.

The minister emphasised that fares must reflect the fuel price increases and be communicated through social media, local media platforms, and visible signage at transport hubs and on vehicles. She instructed intensified field monitoring to ensure driver compliance, adherence to designated routes, and legal action against violations. Oversight of fuel stations was also strengthened to prevent black-market trading, monopolisation and to ensure pumps are correctly calibrated.

The Ministry’s National Network for Emergency Services and Public Safety and Crisis Management Department will continue monitoring developments across all governorates.

Citizens are encouraged to report complaints via emergency numbers, hotlines, or the Ministry’s Your Voice is Heard initiative on WhatsApp at 01200353111, Facebook, or hotline 15330.

Awad reported calm and stability at transport hubs and fuel stations, highlighting coordinated efforts among neighbouring governorates to maintain consistent fares and ensure governors and local officials maintain a continuous field presence to enforce compliance.
