Egypt’s commodity reserves sufficient for up to over 6 months – minister
Egypt’s strategic commodity reserves are sufficient for up to six months, with some items nearing a full year, Supply Minister Sherif Farouk said during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly on Sunday.
Madbouly stressed that monitoring ensures safe stocks, stabilises markets, and balances prices amid regional pressures, while also focusing on agricultural fertilisers, subsidy governance, and support for farmers.
Farouk confirmed that reserves of wheat, rice, sugar, oil, pasta, and meat remain at reassuring levels, attributing this to proactive government plans mitigating the current crisis and safeguarding supply chains.
Agriculture Minister Alaa Farouk outlined plans for the 2026 wheat season to maximise domestic production, narrow the import gap, and secure strategic needs, including expanding collection points, incentivising farmers, and streamlining deliveries. He also highlighted intensified fertiliser distribution monitoring, extended disbursement periods, and governance measures using modern technology to ensure efficiency and prevent manipulation.
