Egypt saves 18,000 MWh of electricity in first week of energy measures – PM
Egypt’s energy-saving plan, introduced in response to heightened regional tensions, delivered electricity savings of 18,000 megawatt-hours and reduced fuel use by 3.5 million cubic metres in its first week, Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly said Tuesday.
A single remote working day accounted for 4,700 megawatt-hours of electricity savings and nearly 980,000 cubic metres of fuel, Madbouly told parliament, adding that the measures remain under review.
The prime minister said the government has moved to cushion the impact of global and regional disruptions, including steps to secure strategic commodities and energy supplies, maintain stable supply chains, and coordinate with the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) to ensure foreign currency availability.
Authorities have also expanded financial support to vulnerable households, plan to increase wages in the upcoming fiscal year, and are working to rationalise public spending and energy consumption, he said.
Madbouly added that Egypt is pursuing longer-term reforms to bolster energy security, including expanding renewable energy capacity, upgrading electricity infrastructure, and accelerating oil and gas exploration.
On regional developments, he said the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran has been accompanied by attacks and violations of sovereignty in several Arab countries, creating new challenges that require intensified diplomatic efforts.
Egyptian diplomacy, led by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, has focused on supporting Gulf Arab states and advancing a political path to end the conflict, Madbouly said.
He reiterated that Egypt’s position is grounded in the principle that Arab national security is integral to its own, warning that violations of sovereignty threaten regional stability and that diplomacy remains the only viable route to de-escalation.
Egypt has maintained active engagement through high-level contacts, coordination with Arab partners, and participation in regional and international initiatives aimed at containing the crisis, he added.
