Egypt to host East Africa Power Pool electricity market operator

Egypt has been selected as the permanent host country for the electricity market operator of the Eastern Africa Power Pool (EAPP), the Ministry of Electricity said on Wednesday.

The agreement was signed during the 21st meeting of the EAPP Council of Ministers, attended by energy ministers, senior officials, heads of electricity utilities from member states, and representatives of international development partners.

The EAPP, which operates under the African Union, includes 13 member countries and aims to expand cross-border electricity interconnection, facilitate power trading, and establish a regional electricity market.

Egypt’s selection reflects confidence in its ability to manage the system and provide the required operational infrastructure, the ministry said.

The move reinforces Egypt’s position as a regional centre for electricity transmission and energy exchange between Africa and Europe.

Egypt has expanded power generation capacity in recent years and invested in grid upgrades and cross-border interconnection projects as it seeks a larger role in regional energy trade.
