Egypt’s Cabinet clarifies $600 mln tourism loss figure is regional
Egypt’s Cabinet on Wednesday denied social media reports that the country was losing $600 million a day in tourism revenue, saying the figure referred to losses across the wider Middle East.
In a statement, the Cabinet Media Centre said the reports were “incorrect, misleading and inaccurate” and had misrepresented remarks made by Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly during a recent address to the parliament.
According to the Cabinet, Madbouly’s original remarks focused on the economic headwinds facing the regional travel industry rather than Egypt specifically. The $600 million figure comes from the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), which estimated daily losses for the entire Middle Eastern sector due to flight cancellations, weaker travel demand, and regional instability.
The media centre urged the public and local media to verify information through official sources before sharing reports that could affect the economy.
