Egypt signs deal to rehabilitate Lebanon’s gas infrastructure
Egypt signed an agreement on Wednesday to rehabilitate Lebanon’s gas transmission network, leveraging its petroleum-sector expertise in a deal aimed at strengthening bilateral energy cooperation.
Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly attended the signing ceremony at the government headquarters in the New Capital, where the two sides agreed to undertake repair and rehabilitation works on Lebanese gas pipelines through the Technical Company for Gas Pipeline Operation Services (TGS).
The agreement was signed by Egypt’s Petroleum Minister Karim Badawy and Lebanon’s Energy and Water Minister Joseph Saddi, in the presence of senior officials from both countries and Lebanese Ambassador Ali Halabi.
Madbouly said the agreement reflects Egypt’s broader effort to deepen cooperation with Lebanon, particularly in energy, and builds on discussions held during his visit to Beirut in December. He said Egypt would make its technical expertise in natural gas infrastructure available to Lebanon to help support its energy system and improve infrastructure efficiency.
Petroleum Minister Badawy said the deal highlights the ability of Egyptian energy companies to execute specialised projects abroad, drawing on decades of experience in operating and maintaining gas pipelines in line with international standards. He added that it reinforces Egypt’s expanding role in regional energy infrastructure development.
Under the agreement, TGS will carry out repair and rehabilitation works on 24-inch gas pipelines spanning roughly 30 kilometres. The scope also includes upgrades to pressure reduction and measurement stations, as well as associated power facilities.
Additional works will include mechanical installations, upgrades to PLC automation systems and SCADA monitoring networks, improvements to cathodic protection systems, and comprehensive technical testing to ensure safe and reliable operation before the system restarts.
The Technical Company for Gas Pipeline Operation Services (TGS) was established in 2018 as a limited liability company under Jordanian law, with participation from Egyptian FAJR, Jordanian Egyptian FAJR, and Egyptian Natural Gas Company (GASCO).
