Revolutionary Socialist Activist Given Extra Four Days’ Detention

Labour lawyer Haytham Mohamadein, a leading member of the Revolutionary Socialists, was ordered on Friday to remain in detention for four days at Attaqa police station in Suez pending investigations.

Mohamadein was arrested at a military checkpoint close to Suez on Thursday. The charges he faces are yet to be officially confirmed and the army has not made any statements yet on the issue.

According to the Revolutionary Socialists’ official Facebook page, Mohamadein has not been referred to the prosecution yet. He was expected to be referred to the prosecution on Friday; however, the decision has been postponed to Saturday.

“It is still unclear whether he will be referred to the general prosecution or state security prosecution,” added the group.

The Revolutionary Socialists’ official Facebook page stated on Thursday that there are unconfirmed reports that Mohamadein faces “forged” charges of “attacking an army soldier on duty.”

Similarly, NGO the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information claimed in a statement that an army officer filed a report against Mohamadein accusing the activist of verbally assaulting him.

A solidarity protest demanding the release of Mohamadein is planned on Saturday at 12pm in front of the prosecutor-general’s office in downtown Cairo.
