Egypt backs China’s 2027 BRICS presidency, urges stronger Global South voice

Egypt backed China’s 2027 presidency of the BRICS group and called for greater representation of developing and emerging economies in global decision-making, according to a joint statement issued on Wednesday.

Egypt supported China’s plans to host the 19th BRICS leaders’ summit in 2027, the statement said.

The two countries agreed to strengthen coordination at international forums including the United Nations, BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and the Group of 20, with cooperation covering issues such as climate change, food security, energy, and the digital economy.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Chinese President Xi Jinping called for greater representation of developing countries in international economic and political decision-making and a stronger role for emerging markets and developing economies in the global system.

They said the two countries’ comprehensive strategic partnership could serve as a model for cooperation among major developing countries based on mutual respect, non-interference and mutual benefit.

Egypt also welcomed Chinese proposals to establish an international mediation organisation and a global organisation for cooperation on artificial intelligence.

The statement was issued during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Egypt, as the two countries mark 70 years of diplomatic relations.
