Egyptian TV presenter and political activist Khaled Teleima announced on his Facebook account on Monday that ONTV channel has informed him by phone of the termination of his contract as anchor of daily morning programme Sabah ON without citing reasons, even though his contract was due to end in April.
Last week, Teleima told viewers in a live episode that the channel’s new administration had not informed him yet whether or not his contract would be renewed.
Teleima is known for being an outspoken supporter of the 25 January Revolution as well as supporting the ouster Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.
In mid-2016, the channel was sold to steel tycoon Ahmed Abu Hasheima, who rose to prominence as a businessman during the last years of former president Hosni Mubarak’s rule.
Last year, Teleima criticised on his show what he described as the government’s bias in arresting protesters against the Egyptian-Saudi Red Sea island agreement while ignoring demonstrators who support the deal.
Last month, Teleima celebrated on his show an administrative court verdict that confirmed the two islands are Egyptian.
Teleima started his career as a TV presenter on ONTV in January 2012, presenting a weekly documentary TV show about Downtown Cairo.
He left ONTV following the ouster of president Morsi to serve as deputy to the minister of youth in the then-interim government.
He returned to ONTV in May 2015 to anchor Sabah ON.
