Arish gas line explodes for 30th time

For the thirtieth time, Arish natural gas pipeline was bombed Sunday by unknown assailants, leaving more than 10,000 houses in the city of North Sinai without gas supply, Youm7 reported.

Two gas stations and a bakery are out of order.  A team from the public prosecution opened an investigation to pursue the perpetrators.

No one has claimed responsibility for the explosion.

Since the January 25 Revolution, gas pipelines in Arish that feed Jordan and Israel have frequently been targeted. The latest explosion of the gas line was on Feb. 8.

North Sinai witnesses security turmoil as a series of “terrorist attacks” in the past two years have killed dozens. On Jan. 29, at least 30 police officers were killed in a series of attacks claimed by Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis.

Some gas pipelines of other governorates have been attacked as well; two natural gas lines exploded in the 6 October City in Giza after unidentified perpetrators planted two bombs underneath in March.

In July, four men bombed a natural gas pipeline in Egypt’s Delta governorate of Gharbia; the four defendants were sentenced to 20 years in prison in March.
