Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Essmat met on Wednesday with Benjamin Hou, CEO of Huawei Egypt, to discuss expanding cooperation in energy storage, smart grids, and digital transformation across the country’s power sector.
The talks focused on battery-based electricity storage and the potential use of Huawei’s technology to establish standalone power storage stations, aimed at enhancing grid stability and ensuring a continuous electricity supply. Both sides also reviewed feasibility studies for multiple sites to boost grid performance and optimize returns from renewable energy projects.
Discussions extended to modernising electricity networks, data centres, and communication systems, as well as deploying artificial intelligence and smart solutions to support Egypt’s transition from a conventional grid to a smart grid capable of integrating higher levels of renewable energy with minimal losses.
Essmat emphasised that battery-based storage systems are essential for the stability and flexibility of the national grid and for sustaining renewable generation. He noted that Egypt plans to add an average of 2,500 megawatts annually from solar and wind power as part of its national energy strategy.
The minister described Huawei as a key partner in Egypt’s digital transformation, highlighting the ministry’s support for collaborations with local and foreign private-sector entities to modernize and strengthen the country’s unified power grid.
