Egypt launches first phase of East Nile Monorail

Egypt on Wednesday inaugurated the first phase of the East Nile Monorail, a new addition to its expanding public transport network linking New Cairo with the New Capital.

Transport Minister Kamel El-Wazir rode the inaugural service from Mostathmereen (Investors) Station in New Cairo to Government District Station in the New Capital, accompanied by National Authority for Tunnels head Tarek Goueili, as operations began on the section running from Al-Mashir Tantawi Station to Al-Adala Station.

During the opening, El-Wazir inspected passenger facilities, ticketing systems, and electronic gates, and tested the fare system, stressing the need for smooth services and clear communication on payment options, including cash, cards, and electronic wallets.

He also reviewed safety systems, including platform screen doors that open only when trains arrive, and later spoke with passengers who described the monorail as a modern, air-conditioned, and high-quality transport service.

El-Wazir said the project represents a “civilisational shift” in Egypt’s transport system, highlighting its role in reducing congestion, cutting emissions, lowering fuel consumption, and encouraging a shift away from private cars.

He added that the monorail has been designed for areas where conventional metro or rail systems are difficult to build, including routes with tight curves, and will serve key residential, commercial, and institutional hubs in New Cairo and the New Capital.

The line connects major destinations, including conference centres, hospitals, universities, government offices, hotels, malls, and sports facilities, and links with other transport systems, including the Light Rail Transit (LRT) at Arts and Culture City Station.
