Egypt signs MoU for first wind turbine factory, 2,000-MW wind project

Egypt signed a memorandum of understanding on Wednesday to establish the country’s first wind turbine manufacturing plant and develop a 2,000-megawatt wind power project in the northern Gulf of Suez, as it seeks to localise clean-energy industries.

The agreement was signed by China’s SANY Group, the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC), and the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA), according to a government statement.

Under the deal, the parties will establish Egypt’s first wind turbine manufacturing facility to supply locally made equipment for domestic wind projects and export surplus output to regional markets.

The 2,000 MW wind power plant shall be financed in local currency, the statement added.

Electricity Minister Mahmoud Esmat said the plant would have an annual production capacity of 2 gigawatts and was expected to be completed no later than two years after signing. The 2,000-MW wind project is due to be connected to the national grid within 23 months.

Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly said renewable energy projects were central to Egypt’s plans to strengthen the electricity sector and diversify energy sources.

“Localising industries linked to renewable energy is a key pillar of efforts to strengthen energy security and support the green transition,” Madbouly said.

He added that President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi was regularly reviewing renewable energy projects and that the government was working with state institutions and local and foreign private-sector partners to implement solar, wind, and energy storage projects under Egypt’s national energy strategy.

Madbouly said Egypt was also expanding battery storage systems to maximise returns from renewable energy and support the stability of the national electricity grid.

The project forms part of Egypt’s broader push to increase the share of renewable energy in its power mix and develop local manufacturing capacity for clean-energy equipment.
