Egypt, WFP discuss subsidy reform, food security cooperation
Egypt’s Minister of Supply and Internal Trade Sherif Farouk held talks on Thursday with a delegation from the World Food Programme (WFP) on expanding cooperation in social protection programmes and developing the country’s subsidy system, the ministry said.
The discussions took place against a backdrop of global supply chain disruptions and volatility in international markets, as Egypt seeks to strengthen cooperation with international partners to secure basic commodity supplies and support food security, according to a statement.
The two sides reviewed efforts to improve the subsidy system, with a focus on better targeting of vulnerable groups. They also discussed using WFP technical expertise in data analysis and vulnerability assessments to improve the efficiency of ration programmes.
Talks also covered digital transformation, including the development of databases and information systems to support decision-making, enhance resource management, and improve transparency in service delivery, the statement said.
Nutrition programmes were also discussed, particularly initiatives aimed at improving dietary outcomes for targeted groups in line with sustainable development goals.
Farouk said cooperation with the WFP provides technical support that complements national efforts in food security, the ministry added.
Both sides agreed to continue coordination in the coming period and to expand technical programmes and capacity-building initiatives to support subsidy reform and digital transformation.
