Egypt’s Amer named Arab central bank governor of the year: UAB

Egyptian Central Bank Governor Tarek Amer was named by the Union of the Arab Banks as the best Arab central bank governor of the year.

“Amer’s nomination came due to his contribution in stabilizing the fiscal policy, leading Egypt’s economic reform program, negotiating with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and launching initiatives that support the economy, including small and medium-sized projects, in addition to tourism, industry, and mortgage sectors,” Secretary-General of the UAB Wessam Aboul Fotouh said Thursday.

Amer is set to receive the UAB’s award in Beirut on November 23 in a grand ceremony gathering more than 1,000 Arab and global bankers.

This is the second time Amer was awarded as the Central Bank Governor of the year for Middle East and North Africa this year. Earlier in August, GlobalMarkets, the newspaper of the IMF/World Bank Annual Meeting, has given the Egyptian banker the title, set to receive the GlobalMarkets award in Washington on October 14.

Egypt agreed to a three-year, $12 billion IMF loan programme in August 2016 tied to ambitious economic reforms that included austerity measures such as subsidy cuts and tax hikes.
