Egypt’s PM reviews first sustainable aviation fuel project

Egypt’s Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly progress on the country’s first sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) project on Monday as the government seeks to reduce carbon emissions from the aviation sector while ensuring adequate fuel supplies to support growing air traffic and airport expansion.

Madbouly discussed the project with Civil Aviation Minister Sameh El-Hefny and Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawy during a meeting focused on strengthening coordination between the two ministries to secure energy supplies for the aviation sector and advance sustainable aviation fuel production.

Sustainable aviation fuel is considered a key tool for reducing carbon emissions from air transport because it can be used in existing aircraft with lower lifecycle emissions than conventional jet fuel.

Madbouly stressed the importance of maintaining stable aviation fuel supplies as Egypt expands airport infrastructure and modernises civil aviation services.

The officials also reviewed measures to ensure uninterrupted aviation fuel supplies during the Hajj and Umrah seasons and other peak travel periods, alongside progress on the country’s first sustainable aviation fuel project, which is being developed by the Ministry of Petroleum in cooperation with the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

Badawy said the ministry is upgrading aircraft refuelling stations at Egyptian airports, expanding fuelling infrastructure and deploying modern refuelling units to accommodate rising air traffic.

He added that domestic demand for aviation fuel is fully met through Egyptian refineries, with production capacity sufficient to meet peak seasonal demand.
