Meta’s Threads beats ChatGPT’s user record

Meta’s Threads has reached 100 million users in less than a week since its launch, beating Open-AI’s ChatGPT’s record of being the fastest-growing online platform to hit the same number, Meta CEO, Mark Zuckerberg announced on Monday.

“That’s mostly organic demand, and we haven’t even turned on many promotions yet,” said Zuckerberg in a Threads post.

Meta’s new platform currently has no ads, as CEO Zuckerberg said the company would only think about monetization once there was a clear path to one billion users.

Threads, which has many similarities with Twitter, allows users posts with up to 500 characters, and supports links, photos, and videos of up to five minutes.

Threads also currently does not feature hashtags and keyword search functions, which would limit its appeal to advertisers and being used as a platform that follows real time events.

Meta is not trying to replace Twitter, as it is aiming for Threads to focus on light subjects like sports, music, fashion, and design, pitching itself as the friendly option for public discourse online, said Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s head.

The Twitter rival launched on Wednesday has celebrities, politicians, and news outlets join the platform, and is seen by analysts as the first serious threat to Elon Musk’s platform.

Twitter had reported 240 million monetizable daily active users since July of last year, but data from web analytics companies indicates the number declining.

Twitter’s web traffic decreased by 11 percent from a year ago during the first days of Threads launch.

Twitter has had its largest usage day last week since February, there is only ONE Twitter, said Twitter CEO, Linda Yaccarino in a tweet, while Musk replied that it may hit an all-time record that week.

Musk has also responded to Threads’s launch by threatening to sue Meta, claiming that it has used its trade secrets and other confidential information to build the platform.
