US, China resume trade talks in Geneva

Senior US and Chinese officials held a second round of talks in Geneva on Sunday, aiming to ease escalating trade tensions, sources told Reuters.

The weekend negotiations began on Saturday with an eight-hour meeting between Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer—their first in-person talks since both nations imposed tariffs exceeding 100 per cent on each other’s goods.

While no official statements were issued regarding the substance or outcome of the discussions, US President Donald Trump later described the talks as a “total reset” conducted in a “friendly, but constructive” manner. Posting on Truth Social, Trump said “great progress” was made and expressed hopes for greater access for American businesses in China.

The meetings took place at the residence of Switzerland’s UN ambassador in Cologny, a location chosen following recent diplomatic outreach by Swiss officials to both countries.
