Egypt-wide railway strike averted after talks

Representatives of the railway workers union said that train drivers have postponed strike plans after meeting with Minister of Transportation Hatem Abdel-Latif on Saturday afternoon.

“We agreed that the ministry will give us a 10 percent raise beginning in May,” said Hashem Rabeh, a union representative who attended the meeting.

Railway drivers and ticket collectors had threatened last week to shut down the country’s railways then agreed to a proposal from the minister of manpower to facilitate negotiations with the minister of transportation.
