Alkan Auto partners with China’s Baic to build EV plant in Egypt

Alkan Auto, a subsidiary of the Egyptian International Automotive Group, signed on Monday an agreement with China’s Baic to establish an electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plant in Egypt.

This move aligns with the Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s vision of transforming the country into a regional industrial hub, promoting local automotive production, and empowering the private sector.

The new plant, which is expected to begin operations by the end of 2025, will span 120,000 square metres and cater to both the domestic market and exports to the Middle East and Africa.

The factory aims to produce 20,000 vehicles annually in its first year, with a target of 50,000 vehicles per year by the end of the fifth year. The project is estimated to create approximately 1,200 jobs and localise 48 per cent of components, with a goal of increasing this to 58 per cent.
