Egypt’s Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawy held talks on Tuesday with International Energy Agency (IEA) Executive Director Fatih Birol on the sidelines of Gastech 2025 in Milan. During the meeting, the two sides agreed to enhance coordination on developing a new joint work programme for 2026 to 2028.
The discussions also focused on strengthening cooperation in energy transition and supply security. Badawy highlighted Egypt’s invitation to the launch of the first regional report on electricity in the Middle East and North Africa, which examined the impact of rising electricity demand and presented potential solutions.
The minister praised the IEA’s pivotal role in bolstering global energy security, describing it as one of Egypt’s most important strategic partners. He also underlined the agency’s collaboration with governments and the private sector in shaping a safe and sustainable energy future, highlighting its efforts in providing reliable data and insights.
Both sides agreed that natural gas would remain a key component of the global energy mix, stressing the importance of low-carbon natural gas as a transitional fuel to support developing countries in achieving a just energy transition.
They also agreed to continue implementing their existing joint work programme, with working groups preparing a workshop on methane emissions reduction. Badawy extended an invitation to Birol to participate in the Egypt Energy Show (EGYPES 2026).
