Egypt seeks Chinese partnership to develop rare earths, strategic minerals
Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat travelled to Beijing on Monday to explore partnerships with Chinese companies in mining and extracting rare and strategic earth materials, critical for technology and industrial applications.
The visit underscores Egypt’s effort to capitalise on newly discovered deposits, many of which require minimal mining and are ready for processing. Esmat will meet with executives from China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO), Norin Mining Ltd., and the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), while also visiting field sites and technology centres to study modern extraction methods.
According to a ministry statement, the visit is part of a broader national strategy to maximise returns from natural resources, establish domestic economic entities, and promote sustainable development and technology localisation. The minister will also engage with firms in renewable energy and energy storage as part of potential collaboration with Chinese partners.
