Egypt upgrades Grand Egyptian Museum ticketing system to curb fraud

Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has launched an upgraded online ticketing platform for the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) to improve the booking process and strengthen digital security amid concerns over fake websites, it said on Monday.

The new system simplifies ticket purchases by reducing steps and introducing a streamlined interface, the ministry said.

Ahmed Ghoneim, chief executive of the GEM Authority, said the move is part of a broader plan to consolidate the museum’s digital presence through a single official ticketing channel linked to its website.

He said several unofficial websites had been impersonating the museum and selling fake tickets, adding that visitors should use only the official booking platform to avoid fraud.

Mohamed Shaban, assistant tourism minister for digital services, said repeated attempts to create fake pages using similar “.com” domains had prompted a shift to the official government-backed “.eg” domain for improved security and credibility.

The new platform is available at tickets.gem.eg, while visit-gem.com will remain active temporarily during a transition period before being fully phased out, the ministry added.

Both systems will be linked through automatic redirects and cross-referencing to ensure a smooth migration until the new platform becomes the sole official booking channel.
