Egypt prepares to host Afreximbank annual meetings in El Alamein

Central Bank of Egypt Governor Hassan Abdalla and African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) President George Elombi said on Wednesday that Egypt was preparing to host the bank’s 33rd Annual Meetings in El Alamein City from 21 to 24 June, 2026.

The meetings will be held under the patronage of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and are expected to bring together policymakers, investors, and business leaders for discussions on trade, energy, infrastructure, digital transformation, and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

At a press conference outlining preparations for the event, Abdalla said Egypt’s hosting reflected its strategic partnership with Afreximbank and its commitment to African economic integration and trade expansion.

“The Meetings extend beyond conventional discussions to advance key continental priorities, including trade finance, regional integration, and the pressing need to reform the global financial architecture to better reflect the development needs of emerging economies,” Abdalla said.

Elombi thanked Egyptian authorities for the preparations to host the event.

“Egypt and Afreximbank share a common vision to accelerate Africa’s economic development, industrialisation, and widespread economic prosperity across the continent,” Elombi said.

He added that Afreximbank continued to focus on industrialisation and intra-African trade through investments in manufacturing, logistics, and trade infrastructure.

Elombi said Afreximbank’s financing in Egypt had reached about $9.5 billion over the past three years, alongside a $250 million African Trade Centre (AATC) project in the New Capital aimed at supporting trade facilitation, logistics, and small businesses.

He also highlighted a proposed African Gold Bank initiative aimed at formalising gold value chains and strengthening African central bank reserves.

The two officials said hosting the meetings could help reinforce Egypt’s position as a regional financial hub and support investment and tourism activity in El Alamein.
