Sisi reviews Obelisk solar plant phase, grid reinforcement plan

Egypt’s Electricity Minister Mahmoud Esmat briefed President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on Sunday on the first 500-megawatt phase of the Obelisk solar plant and its 200-megawatt-hour storage facility. A second 500-megawatt phase is due online in the coming weeks.

The update came during a meeting in which El-Sisi reviewed progress on 105 projects aimed at strengthening the national electricity grid and discussed plans to increase the share of renewable energy in Egypt’s energy mix to 45 per cent within two years.

The meeting, attended by Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly and Esmat, also assessed ongoing grid reinforcement works and preparations to connect solar and wind projects to the system by 2027. Officials further reviewed the expansion of solar generation capacity and battery storage infrastructure.

Discussions also covered the Energy Valley Project, which includes 1.7 gigawatts of solar photovoltaic capacity in Minya, supported by battery storage systems with a combined capacity of 4 gigawatt-hours across Minya, Qena and Alexandria.

Sisi stressed the importance of maintaining grid stability, improving electricity supply quality, expanding storage systems, and localising renewable energy industries, in a bid to enhance energy security, reduce carbon emissions, and accelerate Egypt’s green transition.
