Egypt’s annual inflation rises to 12.8% in Sept – CAPMAS

Egypt’s annual inflation rate rose to 12.8 per cent in September 2026, up from 12.7 per cent in August, while the monthly inflation rate reached 1.5 per cent, with the general consumer price index rising to 294.2 points. The Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) reported on Saturday.

Food and beverages prices increased by 3.2 per cent month on month, driven by a 15.1 per cent rise in vegetable prices, a 2.5 per cent increase in meat and poultry prices, a 2.6 per cent rise in fruit prices, and a 1.2 per cent increase in fish and seafood prices. Cereals and bread prices rose by 0.4 per cent.

Housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel prices increased by 0.8 per cent in September compared with August, while furniture, household equipment and maintenance prices rose by 1.2 per cent.

Health care prices increased by 0.4 per cent, with outpatient services rising by 1.2 per cent and hospital services by 0.7 per cent. Transport prices rose by 0.1 per cent, while vehicle purchase prices increased by 0.3 per cent.

The monthly increases came despite a 1.1 per cent decline in prices for audio-visual, photographic and information-processing equipment and a 0.6 per cent decrease in package holiday prices.

On an annual basis, food and beverage prices rose by 7.9 per cent, with vegetable prices increasing by 30.9 per cent. Housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel prices recorded a 29.6 per cent increase, including a 27.5 per cent rise in actual housing rentals and a 22.6 per cent increase in electricity, gas and other fuel prices.

Transport prices increased by 21.3 per cent year on year, driven by a 24.4 per cent rise in transport services and an 11.2 per cent increase in vehicle purchase prices. Education prices rose by 20 per cent, while communications prices increased by 10.4 per cent.

Health care prices increased by 5.2 per cent annually, with outpatient services rising by 14.5 per cent and hospital services by 18.5 per cent. Prices for medical products, appliances and equipment, however, declined by 1.3 per cent.
