Egypt’s textile exports up 12%, imports fall 59% this year: minister

Egypt’s textile exports increased by about 12 percent, while imports declined by 59 percent this year compared to the same period last year, according to Minister of Trade and Industry Tarek Qabil.

Qabil further said that ministry is preparing a national strategy for the textiles, spinning, and ready-made clothing industry covering all stages of production.

Qabil informed a recent meeting of the board of directors of the Egyptian Chamber of Textile Industries (ECTI) that the current year witnessed cotton cultivation in 223,170 acres compared to 124,560 acres last year, according to Egyptian media reports.

The ministry is also exploring establishment of a new textile city and making efforts to curb textile smuggling, he added.
