Egypt, MSC partner to transform ports, logistics

Egypt’s Holding Company for Maritime and Land Transport signed a memorandum of understanding on Wednesday with Swiss-based Mediterranean Shipping Co SA (MSC), a move aimed to boost the country’s maritime and logistics sector

The agreement, signed in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development Kamel El-Wazir, aims to enhance Egypt’s seaport and dry port operations, railway freight systems, and logistics infrastructure, positioning the country as a regional trade and shipping hub.

Deputy Prime Minister El-Wazir emphasised that the partnership aligns with Egypt’s Vision 2030, which seeks to maximise the country’s geographic advantage and transform it into a global center for transport and logistics.

“The goal is not just to develop modern ports but to establish an integrated system that strengthens Egypt’s competitiveness in global maritime trade,” Deputy Prime Minister El-Wazir stated. “This requires strategic collaborations with industry leaders like MSC to implement international best practices,”

He highlighted that Egypt is making rapid progress in upgrading its transport infrastructure to facilitate smoother trade, lower costs, and drive sustainable economic growth.

Under the agreement, MSC will conduct feasibility studies and explore investment opportunities in several key sectors:

  • Seaport Development: Enhancing the capacity and competitiveness of Egyptian maritime ports.
  • Container Terminal Management: Streamlining port operations to improve efficiency.
  • Dry Port Expansion: Reducing congestion at seaports and strengthening supply chain networks.
  • Rail Freight Upgrades: Linking ports to industrial zones, reducing transport costs, and easing road traffic.
  • Maritime Transport Innovation: Identifying additional areas of cooperation to modernize Egypt’s logistics sector.

Deputy Prime Minister El-Wazir described the MoU as a milestone agreement that will accelerate Egypt’s maritime transformation and attract more global investment into its logistics sector.

The new collaboration reflects growing international confidence in Egypt’s ability to be a key player in global trade, he added.

MSC CEO Soren Toft said given Egypt’s strategic location and growing infrastructure, the country has the potential to be a global leader in maritime trade.
