60 million people need training for green jobs: ILO official

The demand for green jobs is outpacing the production of green talent and there is urgent need to train around 60 million people in the coming few years, a senior official at the International Labour Organisation (ILO), said on Monday.

In an interview with CNBC Arabia at COP28, Peter Rademaker, deputy regional director for Arab Countries at the ILO, expects 10 million new jobs will be created in the the Middle East and North Africa region. Rademaker called the governments of this region to train the young generations and prepare for greener and more sustainable future.

What are green jobs?

Green jobs are positions that focus on preserving the environment, reducing waste, conserving natural resources, and providing more sustainable ways of living and working. They are essential in addressing the global ongoing environmental challenges and guaranteeing a sustainable future for generations to come.

They can span across numerous industries through a wide range of roles, from working in environmentally-friendly transportation to specialising in renewable energy.
