Egypt working to secure wheat from regions other than Russia, Ukraine – official
Egypt, often the world’s largest wheat importer, is working on a plan to secure wheat imports from other regions instead of the conflicting Russia and Ukraine, the state news agency reported, citing Cabinet spokesman on Saturday.
“There are 14 approved countries Egypt could import wheat from, some of which are outside Europe,” Nader Saad told a local television channel late Saturday.
Russia and Ukraine are frequently the biggest exporters of wheat to Egypt, representing around 50 percent and 30 percent of its wheat imports in 2021, respectively, data from two regional traders shows.
Egypt’s current wheat reserves and future local wheat purchases would be sufficient for around nine months, Saad added.
Due to concerns over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Egypt’s central bank of Egypt and government are working together “to secure the country’s needs,” the Cabinet spokesman said.
