Egyptian Ministry of Local Development has planted 7.2 million trees across the country since the beginning of FY2022/23, a part of the president’s 100 Million Trees initiative, according to the Minister Hesham Amna said on Sunday.
The initiative is a joint effort between the Ministry of Local Development, Ministry of Environment, and the New Urban Communities Authority.
The largest number planted so far was the 7.2 million trees planted by the Ministry of Local Development, with a target of 7.7 million in the first phase.
The New Urban Communities Authority aims to plant 1 million trees while the Ministry of Environment aims to plant 1.3 million trees by the end of the current fiscal year 2022/2023.
The 100 Million Trees initiative was launched last summer to help in the battle against climate change.
In January, the Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly said that the initiative aims to increase access to green spaces, reduce greenhouse gases, improve air quality, and enhance public health.
The initiative also aims to establish a total of 6,600 acres of forests and public parks in 9,900 different locations across the country. The establishments and plantings should end in 2029.
