Egypt’s GPY oil field restarts with record production

The Egyptian General Petroleum Company (EGPC) has successfully brought the GPY oil field, located in Egypt’s Western Desert, back online after years of inactivity. Discovered in 1981, the field had ceased production for several years before a dedicated team spearheaded its return to operation, achieving the highest production rates in its history, Egypt’s Petroleum Ministry reported on Thursday.

The revival strategy involved drilling inclined wells to target new reservoirs in optimal locations, based on a clearer understanding of the subsurface structure. The company implemented a high-quality seismic survey across all its concessions in the Western Desert, complemented by modern logging techniques and integrated analyses. This approach enabled EGPC to unlock production from previously untapped layers with high efficiency.

Over a three-year period since its restart, the GPY field has produced approximately 1.5 million barrels of oil equivalent—marking its highest output in over four decades. This milestone underscores EGPC’s commitment to leveraging advanced technology and innovative strategies to enhance Egypt’s energy resources.
