Egypt inaugurates African Space Agency’s HQ

Egypt officially inaugurated the headquarters of the African Space Agency (AfSA) in Cairo on Sunday, marking a significant step in the country’s support for African integration and its leadership on the continent.

The ceremony, attended by Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Atty, highlighted the country’s commitment to advancing Africa’s space ambitions and fostering regional cooperation. Minister Abdel-Atty emphasised that Egypt’s efforts to establish AfSA are in line with the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which envisions a united, peaceful, and prosperous Africa.

The agency is not just a facility, but a platform for enhancing collaboration among African nations in the peaceful use of outer space, Minister Abdel-Atty said. He noted that AfSA will play a crucial role in fostering knowledge exchange and building capacity across the continent, ultimately contributing to the development of space science and technology in Africa.

The minister also stressed the importance of presenting a unified African stance in global forums, particularly within the United Nations, to advocate for Africa’s interests in space exploration and technology. He further encouraged partnerships with research institutions, universities, and international space agencies to strengthen Africa’s capabilities in this critical sector.
