Sukari Gold Mine rockfall kills worker, injures five in Egypt
Underground operations suspended as authorities investigate accident and review safety procedures
A rockfall at Egypt’s Sukari gold mine in the Eastern Desert killed one worker and injured five others, prompting authorities to suspend underground operations during the investigation, the petroleum ministry said on Sunday.
The deceased worker was identified as Abdelrahman Nabil Mahmoud. The five injured workers were taken to the One-Day Surgery Hospital in Marsa Alam and are in stable condition, according to the ministry’s statement.
Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawy ordered the Mineral Resources and Mining Industries Authority (MRMIA) to form a committee to determine the cause of the accident and review occupational health and safety procedures at the mine.
Underground work has been suspended until the investigation is completed and the required safety measures are confirmed, the ministry said.
Badawy offered condolences to Mahmoud’s family and colleagues and directed officials to provide the necessary support to his family.
The ministry said it was monitoring developments and the condition of the injured workers, while emphasising the importance of worker safety at the mine.
