Suez Canal Achieves New Record Cargo

Egypt’s vital waterway Suez Canal has achieved the second record number of cargo ships sailing through it on a single day, said Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority Mohab Mamish on Friday.

As many as 59 ships crossed the Suez Canal on Saturday, carrying a total cargo of 4.1 million tons.

On August 9, the canal achieved its highest record with total cargo ships hitting 4.8 million tons, Mamish said.

“The Egyptian economy will benefit from these record numbers,” Mamish went on to say.

Suez Canal revenues are, along with tourism and overseas remittances, a major component of Egypt’s foreign currency reserves.
