Italy tourism reservations to Egypt fall 90% during summer 2015
Travel reservations made by Italian tourists to visit Egypt have dived by 90 percent a year-on-year, Mohamed Abdel-Gabbar, the head of the Egyptian International Tourism Sector, told reporters Saturday.
He laments the drop on the case of Italian student Giulio Regeni who was tortured and found dead in Cairo last week as well as the Russian plane crash in Sharm El-Sheikh last October 31st killing all 224 people on board.
An Egyptian mission has participated in the International Travel Fair, known as Bit (Borsa Internazionale Del Turismo) held in Milano between February 11 and 13th, seeking to boost the tourism cooperation between the two countries.
The International Travel Fair, known as Bit (Borsa Internazionale del Turismo) is an event that brings together trade operators from all over the world, a large audience of visitors, travel lovers, television reporters and press.
On the sidelines of the Italian fair, the Egyptian official announced the Egyptian tourism authority had made a deal with Meridiana, the private capital Italian airline, to facilitate flights between Milano and Sharm El-sheikh starting March 2016.
Italy came in the fifth place of the most countries that establish companies operating in the Egyptian tourism industry between January and November 2015, according to the Egyptian investment authority – GAFI.
Italy ranked sixth in terms of the number of tourists arrived to Egypt in 2015 with total number of 333.000 tourists. In 2004, Italy was the first country to achieve the one million tourists to Egypt.
