Egypt signed three memoranda of understanding on Sunday to strengthen pharmaceutical and healthcare cooperation across Africa, including an agreement to host the operational headquarters of the African Pharmaceutical Procurement Mechanism (APPM).
The agreements were signed during the fifth Africa Health ExCo conference, attended by Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly on behalf of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
The first memorandum was signed by the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA) and Algeria’s National Agency for Pharmaceutical Products (ANPP) to expand cooperation in pharmaceuticals and medical supplies.
The second agreement, signed by Egypt’s Unified Procurement Authority (UPA) and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), provides for Egypt to host the operational headquarters of the APPM, an initiative aimed at improving access to medicines and strengthening pharmaceutical procurement across the continent.
The UPA and Africa CDC also signed a third memorandum covering Egypt’s participation in the APPM initiative, as well as cooperation in pharmaceutical procurement and coordination efforts.
The agreements form part of broader efforts to strengthen regional healthcare cooperation and support the development of pharmaceutical systems across Africa, according to a government statement.
