Egypt targets leadership in green energy with bold hydrogen vision
Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Badr Abdel-Atty outlined on Thursday the country’s ambitious plans to become a global hub for green energy production and export, particularly in green hydrogen and ammonia.
Speaking at the British Egyptian Business Association (BEBA) event, Minister Abdel-Atty said Europe had designated Egypt as a hub for the production and export of green ammonia.
The minister emphasised ongoing collaborations with leading European companies, such as Maersk, which is building the biggest bunker station in the Suez Canal to fuel ships with clean energy. He also pointed to partnerships with Scandinavian and Belgian firms to advance green hydrogen and ammonia projects aimed at export markets in Europe.
Egypt has the potential to become a regional leader in renewable energy, he remarked, underscoring the government’s target of contributing 42 per cent of renewable energy to the national energy mix by 2035.
The minister highlighted Egypt’s competitive advantages, including its strategic location and integration into agreements like the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), which allows goods with 50 per cent local content to enter African markets duty-free. These factors make Egypt a key player in the global green energy transition.
